Audience Profiles

Audience Profiles

My magazine is aimed at 16-25 year old people. This is because of the content inside the magazine being more driven towards a younger audience. It is aimed at festival goers as it has all the latest information on festivals and gigs. There will be articles on new indie/alternative bands and artists as well as articles on more established artists. I am aiming for a relatively short magazine of 50-75 pages, however it will have no ads so will be purely useful and entertaining information. This short, stylish magazine will appeal to my target market.

Identifying my magazine genre

The genre I have decided to focus my magazine on is general Indie music. I have chosen this because Indie musicians are more quirky and interesting just as I would like my magazine to be. There is no other genre like Indie it's unique and ever changing style makes their music interesting.
An example of an Indie band is the Arctic Monkeys they are 4 fashionable males, their lead singer Alex Turner is the front of the band and has changed his style a number of times by changing his hair and other things. The rest of the band also have different unique looks that when put together work perfectly. Their always evolving style interests me, you can hear through their Indie rock music that they have a unique sound. They have a lot of fans for an Indie band possibly the biggest Indie band in existence. Their fans often look up to them not just because of their music but their style too.

The 1975 are another indie band, their style is also unique less smart than the Arctic Monkeys' but more casual. They attract all sorts of people to their music as it is different but has become very popular in the last few years.

Language Register

Different styles and genres of magazines make different language register decisions. For example a magazine directed at a younger hip-hop audience would be more colloquial, use more slang and possibly use phrases only their target market would understand. The 'Vibe' magazine would be a great example of this as it is directed at a younger audience. However if the magazines target audience is a little older like 'DIY' the language will be more formal and civilised as an older audience is more comfortable with more text which leads on to talking about the size of the text; the text in a more civilised magazine such as 'DIY' would be smaller as they would need to fit more in. As you can see below 'DIY' has more writing in it's articles than 'Vibe' which is in a larger font which means there is less writing, this is because it is directed at a younger audience who do not like reading long articles. As you can see 'DIY' goes for a simplistic design because it's audience is more into civilised design. 'Vibe' is still using a stylish design but it has a few more features that are more eye catching to grab the readers attention. I have decided I am going to adopt a minimalistic design with a relatively formal tone, I will include a few phrases or words which the target market can relate to as well to make the magazine seem more familiar.
